Working From Home and the Gig Economy

A recent report by the ONS has revealed that by 2020, 50% of the workforce in the UK will be operating remotely. As such, it is predicted that a number of sectors will be operating with a higher level of flexibility either from their home or potentially somewhere like a hot desk.

It’s worth noting that this doesn’t necessarily mean all these employees will be part of the gig economy. Though many could work as freelancers, businesses are also hiring employees with long term contract benefits while allowing them to operate remotely.

Why Is This Happening?

One of the main reasons for the growth of remote operations is certainly the increase and evolution of technology. Tech such as cloud servers has provided freelancers as well as employees with the option of working from home and still being able to gain all the information that they require to function effectively.

Furthermore, globalisation of certain businesses has brought a need for companies to be more competitive on the market. By introducing remote workers into their business models, companies can reduce the need for office space and in doing so ensure that they are able to cut management and maintenance costs.

On top of this, multiple platforms have been set up which are disrupting different business sectors and providing the resources that clients and companies need to discover the freelance agents that they want. These platforms have also provided remote workers with an easy way to access the clients necessary to maintain a high level of flexibility.

There are numerous business sectors that are providing this type of possibility for working professionals.

Solicitors

You might be working in the legal field where It is now possible to work independently from home as a freelance solicitor and find your own clients. However, you can also get the best of both worlds by using a service like PassionForLaw.com. This legal site allows you to work from home while gaining the traditional benefits of an in-house law firm. As such, you get a range of benefits including paralegal, secretarial support and IT resources.

This is an example of how remote work can be seamlessly integrated into a more traditional business model to bring tremendous benefits for the individual worker.

IT Specialists

An IT specialist can operate from home by setting themselves up on a freelance platform. By doing this, they will be able to find the clients who want to use your services. Some platforms will allow you to bid on the jobs that you want.

This can be both a positive and a negative. On the one hand, you will be able to be as competitive as you like with your pricing which can allow you to gain the interest of more clients. On the other hand, it’s possible that another freelancer could undercut the price that you can afford to sell your service.

That’s why you need to make sure that you may want to see out long term contracts with companies. These days, companies are striving to avoid hiring permanent IT staff because this is an expensive option. Instead, they are using freelancers where they are able to get the expert solution they want for significantly less money.

IT specialists are particularly useful as freelancers because their work can literally be completed remotely. This means that the freelancer will be able to take control of a computer from their home. They will then able to fix any issues with it, often without visiting the business premises. Similarly, they can monitor a computer server using cloud technology as well,

Travel Agents

Finally, you might be interested in working in the travel industry. Travel industry experts mainly provide services to their clients over the phone or online through email contact points. As such, it is the perfect business model for working from home.

There are other similar careers that can operate on the same level as well. For instance, you could become a call handler. While call handling companies, used to run their business from massive offices with multiple people, today, it’s more common for workers to be provided a script and work independently in their own space.
