One of the first pieces of advice I received when I started working in advertising was this: never offer to make the tea or take the minutes until your feet are under the table. The thought was that, as a woman new to a business, if you positioned yourself as the one who took the minutes or made the tea you’d close yourself off as the one to default to for progression and promotion.
And, for me, it worked: five years later as an Account Director, sitting in a meeting of men (a couple of them more Junior than me), I was asked to take minutes. “I’d love to, John” I said, “but it’s not something I’ve done before. Perhaps you could ask one of your male colleagues?” Two months later I was promoted.
It’s not just at work we’re fighting the patriarchy: contending with the gender pay gap, striving to be noticed for promotion while juggling your family life or fighting to smash the glass ceiling. It can happen at home too, where you’re pondering the skewed division of domestic labour. And it’s also apparent in the media, making you tear your hair out with their unhelpful stereotypes. Whichever way you cut it, it’s exhausting to be a woman, to fight to be heard above our male counterparts. And I’m sick of dragging my eye bags around!
Make your statement with this mug: “WOMEN NEED MORE SLEEP THAN MEN BECAUSE FIGHTING THE PATRIARCHY IS EXHAUSTING”. The text – taken from an article in The Cut I read back in 2016 – is perfect to serve up to a misogynist with their hot drink.
The next time you’re asked to make the tea at work by a male colleague? Give it to them in this.
All mugs are 10oz/284ml and ceramic, both dishwasher and microwave-safe.
