Creating a Solo Home After Divorce
interior ideas

There’s nothing more stressful than divorce, apart from moving house. Unfortunately, the two often go together. After all, marriage and the home are intrinsically connected.

Not only is it a space you’ve probably invested in financially together, but also emotionally. With memories embedded into each corner, it’s no wonder moving on can feel overwhelming.

At any time in life, the prospect of creating a new home alone can be sad and scary. But it doesn’t have to be as bad as you think. The process of getting rid of both physical and emotional baggage can be cathartic and exciting. And, the great thing is you’re now totally free to make your own choices. For instance, you can decide where you want to live (modern apartment in the city centre or a rustic barn conversion in rural idyll) or how to decorate (retro chic or contemporary minimalism).

Investing time into creating your new nest is also an opportunity to re-connect with yourself.  So, your home truly reflects who you are at this junction in your life.

If you need a little extra inspiration to help you create a new nest after divorce, here are five easy tips to follow:

#1 Mindful Declutter

It’s not just the wedding album and framed photographs that act as reminders of marriage. But everyday objects can also carry deep associations. Like the clay crockery set, you bought on holiday or the collection of cookbooks carefully gathered over the years. Although, it’s tempting to throw everything away or be unable to part at all. Give yourself time, don’t rush into decluttering. But at the same, don’t put it off. Get a friend or family member to help you. They can help you work out what needs to go and what should stay.

#2 Don’t wait to unpack

Once you move into your new place (it doesn’t matter if it’s rented or permanent), make sure you unpack all your stuff as quickly as possible. Living amongst cardboard boxes will leave you feeling even more uprooted and unsettled. Instead, focus on creating a welcoming homely space for yourself. For instance, put up your favourite pictures, place your books on shelves, light candles and add rugs and cushions. Once you see your stuff out of bags and boxes and in it’s the functional place, you’ll start to feel immediately more at home.

#3 Connect with nature

We know nature is great for our mental well-being. Try to get outside as much as you can. Go for country walks or visit local parks. Gardening is also a wonderful tonic to lift the spirits. So, if you don’t have a garden, why not get an allotment? Don’t worry if you’ve never grown anything before, use this as an opportunity to learn a new skill and maybe even make some friends.

Or, you can bring nature inside and buy a selection of plants for your house — this will make it feel even more homely.  And, you don’t need green-fingers either as there are plenty of plants that need minimal care like cacti.

But, it’s not just trees and plants that can help, why not get a pet? Animals can have a powerful therapeutic effect on our lives. The act of caring and looking after one can help the healing process. If you’re worried about the commitment, maybe offer to dog sit for a friend or take the grandkids out to the petting zoo.

#4 Treat yourself

Making a new nest can take time. And, you may discover after a few weeks you now deeply dislike the couch which you previously loved. Or realise the colour of the walls drives you crazy. Don’t wait around too long to fix and change things that you don’t like anymore. To speed things along, spent a little money. For instance, get the walls repainted in a shade you love. Also, treat yourself. Go out and buy new pots and pans, or new kettle. Also, replace old bathroom towels and buy fresh bedding — it will go a long way in making your space feel even more yours.
