I mentioned recently that we’ve been trying hard to improve our nutrition, which has included a fish-fuelled meal plan from nutritionist Juliette Kellow and the geniuses behind Fish is the Dish. I initially thought the challenge to slightly change our diets would be an easy one but finding inspiration for our new healthier meals has proved tricky.
To help you out I thought I’d collect together here a list of ideas that have really assisted us in the last month. From looking to the supermarket to having someone else do the legwork for you, you’ll be on your way to a happier healthier diet in no time:
Buy Hollandaise sauce
Hollandaise sauce is a magic ingredient. It’s a massive ballache to make yourself (and I have cried over many a curdled Hollandaise egg in my time), but did you know you can buy it freshly made for you in the supermarket? Now you do!
We really enjoyed Waitrose’s version: stick this on your cod fillet, cook some spinach and new potatoes to accompany and you’ve got yourself a beautiful (and healthy!) meal.

I’ve already given you our recipe for Fish Finger Wraps and an Easy Asian Fish dish, but there are so many more out there. I love this Moules Marniere Cymru-style from Fish is the Dish – easy to prepare but looks impressive – as well as this Prawn Tikka Pilaf and Roasted Cod with Parma Ham. Yum. I also love a good Fish Taco (easily adaptable for the kids), and one of our family favourites is this Easy Fish Pie.
Order when you’re out
Ordering fish when you’re at a restaurant is one of the easiest ways to get a portion in. I MAY have ordered lobster on more than one occasion recently, as well as a gorgeous lemon sole that I ordered over Christmas. The Moules is my favourite thing to eat when I dine at Brasserie Blanc (they’re amazing with the french fries) and you can’t beat a good beer battered cod fillet. GO WILD!
Stock up on tinned fish
Juliette tells me that tinned fish is just as good for us as fresh, particularly varieties such as anchovies and pilchards as the bones mean you get all the goodness from the calcium. In my opinion there are few things as good as a tuna and cucumber sandwich on a fresh white loaf, just make sure you use lashings of mayonnaise.
