Top Tips For Breaking Free From Denim

January 31, 2018

Denim is a steadfast staple of my wardrobe – and the wardrobes of many of you reading this, I’m sure. Versatile enough to be dressed up or down, warm enough to see you through long, British winters and durable enough to withstand weekend play-dates with the kids, a pair of well-fitting jeans is as essential as they come. It’s for those reasons that it’s so easy for us to get stuck in a denim-lined rut, recycling the same pieces day after day with little variation between. If you’re also a little too dependent on your favourite pair of jeans, here are a few top tips to help you break the denim cycle.

Experiment with smart-casual wear

‘Smart-casual’ continues to be one of the more difficult fashion terms to define, yet one of the easiest ways to nail the look is simply by combining pieces that fall clearly into each category. While typically found in more formal office environments, a pair of smart, tailored trousers can be surprisingly versatile when worn the right way. Pair with an oversized, slouchy knit for a modern take on a classic weekend ensemble, or tuck in a slim-fitting t-shirt and add a pair of trainers for a look that will effortlessly take you from day to evening.

Recycle summer skirts and dresses

Summer dresses and floaty skirts may be the furthest thing from our minds at the moment, but styling them in a way that will help you beat the winter chill is easier than many first think. Of course, a thick pair of opaque black tights is an essential here, while open-knit cardigans are particularly on trend at the moment and prove an effortless way to bring a seasonal update to your favourite summer pieces. Even a lightweight, silky slip can be recycled simply by adding a thin knit or turtleneck jumper underneath.

The return of the leggings

Women’s leggings have come a long way since the fluorescent peddle-pushers of the 1980’s, and have even been hailed a modern fashion staple by the likes of Vogue. The trick is to source a pair that’s plush and supportive, so as not to reveal any tell-tale VPL’s or become see-through after their first wash. The finished look needn’t be boring either, as the selection of leggings from Tu covers everything from vibrant florals to tartan and aztec-inspired styles. Pair with something cosy and oversized on top to balance the silhouette in a way that flatters just about every frame.

Take it wide

Wide-leg trousers scream style and sophistication, but are notoriously difficult to style. Countless celebrities have made them work – from Sara Sampaio to Nadine Leopold – yet they’re often a source of contention for those who don’t naturally boast supermodel proportions. No matter what colour or pattern you choose, keep it slim-fitting up top, or opt instead for a wide-leg jumpsuit to diffuse any amount of guesswork.

Despite my passion for denim, I’m always willing to try something new in a bid to give my beloved jeans a break. If you have any more denim-free styling tips, be sure to share them below!
