My parent’s house has the best light. They renovated the place from a 1960s bungalow, healing and removed all the old (small) dated windows in favour of floor-to-ceiling loveliness. And it really makes a difference; the house is bathed in gorgeous natural light from the moment the sun rises to whenever it sets.
For this reason, purchase their house is my first port of call when it comes to taking beautiful pictures of the children. Seriously, every single one of my favourite snaps of my two has been taken in their open-plan living-dining-kitchen space, the light is just THAT GOOD. It makes people – and life, itself – sparkle in there!
And it’s not just the living area, either. Their floor-to-ceiling windows in the bedroom have the same uplifting effect. You wake in the morning to gaze over the garden, sun streaming in (well, in my dreams… mostly it’s cloud-covered but let’s stick with the dream, shall we?), birds chirping in the trees. It really is the most gorgeous situation, I’m like Cinderella over here when I stay at mum and dad’s place.
The light really has such a positive effect on everyone. It’s something I actively notice; in winter, my own house can get a little dark and dreary because we really do have a lack of light coming in from the garden. But in contrast at mum and dad’s, even in the depth of winter, with the overload of vitamin D from all those windows it’s easier to be cheery.
In fact, in the real depth of winter, with snow coming down (crossing fingers) is when such a bright space really comes into its own. If it’s deep enough, the light bouncing of the flakes of crisp white snow into the house is truly a sight to behold. Makes those freezing cold toes worthwhile!
So how can you get your own sun-streamed palace?
It might sound a little daunting to the uninitiated, but it’s actually easier than you might think to transform your home into a paradise of light and happiness.
Take Albion Windows, for example, a London-based windows company who will quite happily assist you in every step towards your goal of a lighter, brighter home. They can assist with every kind of light-giving glass product, from double glazing, doors (BIFOLD DOORS are the dream!) to conservatories (THE original garden room)… anything your sun-starved heart desires.
But promise me one thing: once you have your new windows and doors installed, you’ll have the Instagram shoot of dreams in the new light-filled space? Believe me, you won’t be disappointed with the happiness it brings into your insta-stream (and your home!).
