Shopping for the New House

November 3, 2016

I feel like I’ve been banging on about the fact we’ve been moving house for months. Probably because I have, purchase but you know, it’s an exciting process, getting a new gaff.

As the six-week countdown has now begun I’ve started on all the house move jobs with gusto: there’s the de-cluttering (always necessary with two toy-loving and highly untidy children), the cleaning, the throwing out of tins of tuna that are embarrassingly past their sell-by date.

But it’s also the time that I’ve started thinking about the more fun aspects of moving house. No, I don’t mean the packing up of every single one of my worldly belongings (apparently there are A LOT) but the plotting of the furniture of the new house. And, most specifically, the plotting of the furniture I may – no, DEFINITELY – need to buy.

It’s pretty exciting this time around: tables, windows and beds. I can’t wait to crack out my credit card and get shopping!

I bought my current kitchen table, a lovely wooden round affair, back when Elfie was a baby and Hux was an idea. It was an eBay deal, £40 from somewhere in Bedford, plus however much the man and van charged me to collect it. I loved that table to bits, lovingly sanding and Annie Sloan chalk painting the base, adding in new modern IKEA chairs to offset its wooden-ness. It’s served us well throughout the years but I have to admit, the combination of Hux’s crazy  capacity as a toddler to make dents in the table top with a teaspoon plus some irremovable shoe polish splatters (whoops) means it’s time for a new one.

I’m going to go for marble-topped loveliness next this around, perfect not just for those messy children of mine (TRY DENTING MARBLE, HUX) but for Instagram flatlays too ;) I can’t wait for its lovely sleek whiteness, I think it’s really going to be a show-stopping piece in our new open-plan living space

Windows are up next, because though the house is in a beautiful state there are one or two things that need to be dealt with: and this is one of them. Luckily I’ve found Win-Dor and I’m off to one of their showrooms this weekend to have a good old gander at the options I have – they’re supposed to be the best window installers in Northampton. Not going to lie: dream weekend.

Saving the best til last and that is the new bed I’m planning on purchasing. I’ve never bought a bed that isn’t from IKEA and from the new house I’m keen to treat myself. Which is why I’m going to go for a plush upholstered headboard in a neutral shade of grey with a fancy pants king-sized mattress using reviews from The Sleep Judge. If you thought it was hard to get me out of bed at the moment, talk to me in two months when I’m in love with my new sleep set-up. I can’t wait!

What are your favourite things to buy when you move house?
