Christmas Gift Guide: For The Kid Who Reminds You Of Your Favourite Childhood Characters

Some of my very earliest memories involve Roger Hargreaves’ Mr Men franchise.

My mum would bring my brother and I to see my grannie once a month, who’d saved all her 5p pieces to give to us because they were too small for her fingers. We’d visit the John Lewis that’s now five minutes away from my house and I’d spend my grannie-given pocket money on Mr Men books. By the time I’d grown out of them I had the whole set, and I loved reading through those lighthearted stories that all had deeper – and numerous! –  meanings.

Mr Men (and Little Miss books) were one of the things I was really excited to introduce to the children as they grew up, and I started buying them up somewhat prematurely while Elfie was still in the womb. I love how they open conversations about the differences in people – how these can be a positive thing and we can all live together in harmony. Even if you are a Mr Tickle or a Mr Nosey or a Little Miss Fickle… there’s a place for everyone.

Which is why the first Christmas present I’ve bought the children this year is Mr Men themed! And not only do I get to buy into some of my favourite children’s book characters with this gift, but I also solve the issue of the bloody school water bottles. Elfie and Hux both are required to take water bottles to school daily which is a great thing – you can’t think properly if your brain is dehydrated – but pretty much every child at school has the same water bottle from John Lewis.

Not any more! I visited the Mr Men shop to personalise two water bottles for my favourite little people, choosing their favourite characters and making sure they’ll never lose their bottles again in the process.

For Elfie, the girl who has at various times come home with one PE shoe or three PE shoes we have Little Miss Scatterbrain. We love this story and have read it together (and giggled over it together) hundreds of times.

For Huxley, the boy who was in such a happy daze last week that he gave himself a black eye with a NASA space rocket (not an actual full-size one, you understand) we have the classic Mr Happy. Again a book we’ve read as a family over and over – one of our all-time favourites.

There are all kinds of products at the Mr Men shop ready to be personalised, from mugs to prints to magnets and bags. Simply select your favourite Mr Men or Little Miss character, enter the name and bob’s your uncle: the perfect Christmas gift for your Mr Tickle or Little Miss Chatterbox.

As an addition I bought each book to correspond with the character for Elfie and Hux (you can never have too many duplicates – I bought mine from Amazon). They’re going to be thrilled, as am I: we’ll never lose a water bottle again!

Thank you to the Mr Men shop for giving me a credit to spend on these gifts. I’m so excited to see what Elfie and Hux think at Christmas!

thank you SO much for this post! I’ve just placed an order. I can never find anything with Violet’s name on it, and seeing her look hopefully at bookmarks/hairbands/those chunky old name bottles, and then seeing her face fall is horrible. I know she’s going to get such a kick out of seeing her name on her new water bottle!
