There are a few things you’ll notice when you enter what feels like the parallel universe that is Brooklyn, New York.
Number one: you’ll feel like you’re on a TV, or movie set. From the skyline you’ve so often admired on Friends and Sex and the City to the coffee shops and bars of Girls, there really is no vibe like it. You might round a corner and bump into Lena Dunham or Alexa Chung (has happened) – it’s a truly magical place.
Number two: you will notice that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE is insanely well-dressed.
I mean, the first week I spent in New York four years ago I just felt incredibly displaced. I like my clothes, but I hadn’t been prepared for the incessant fashion parade of young and hip New York women. Every time I went out I felt like the kid at school who dressed in their school uniform on non-uniform day: uncomfortable and just a little bit out of place.
The next time I visited I was prepared. I’d reviewed my wardrobe, picked up some sartorial tips and packed my Samsonite accordingly. I strode onto Bedford each and every day in my revised look feeling a million dollars – if not a little hungover.
And I have carried those fashion rules I learned through to my everyday-maybe-slightly-more-mundane life back in the UK. It has revolutionised – nay, simplified – the way I dress. Look, I don’t think it’s a positive thing to judge one’s self-worth against what they wear but sometimes you can’t help but let the way you look affect your confidence, and I love my new borderline Brooklyn style!
Which is why, when the lovely people at CollectPlus asked me to think about my ideal summer wardrobe, I thought I’d give mine a BK twist.
If you haven’t heard of CollectPlus, where have you been? They offer services that are perfect for busy people with an unhealthy ASOS habit like me, giving you options to collect or return your online shopping parcels from your local convenience store. I’d wager about 90% of the clothes shopping I do is online, and anything to make this process easier for me is a winner.
All you do is specify ‘CollectPlus’ when you check out from your favourite online stores and you need not worry about being at home for delivery, simply pick up from your CollectPlus convenience store in your own time (there are 5,800 of them located across the country!).
Where it comes into its own for me is when returning items: so often this process via the Post Office is a massive headache – the queues, the parking – and CollectPlus removes this stress. I just mosey on down to the corner shop and BOOM! Job’s a good’un.
Give CollectPlus a go: I’ve outlined some of my favourite New York-inspired but UK-based styles all the way from Brooklyn. I’ll be wearing some of these this week!

It gets hot in New York. HOT HOT HOT. So the New York woman has truly embraced one of the finest of all dress styles, the backless dress. Worn in New York with a cute bra (or no bra, if you’re brave) and back in the UK with a tshirt (or polo necked sweatshirt ;) underneath. Here are my picks:
Buy a banging pair of sunnies
Because of all that sunshine in the Big Apple, you’re going to want a beautiful pair of sunglasses. NYC girls don’t go big on their accessories but they do go cool on their face furniture. I’m a lifelong Rayban fan (6 pairs at last count…) and here are my current favourite picks, with a couple more budget-friendly options, too.
Classic Rayban Wayfarers, £125, John Lewis. Round pink Rayban sunglasses, £143, John Lewis. Tortoise oval Rayban sunglasses, £161, John Lewis. Skinny round sunglasses, £10, ASOS. Monki metal bar sunglasses, £15, ASOS. Pimkie sunglasses, £6.99, ASOS.
Rock the high-waist
NYC ladies love high-waist and a crop top! Now, I might not go in for a big crop but I always love that I can tuck my mum tum into a pair of high-waist denims (anyone else?). Here’s what I’ll be sporting this summer:
Relaxed cropped mom jeans, £35.99, Mango. Super high waist Maca jeans, £19.99, Mango. Ted Baker high waisted wax finished jeans, £99, John Lewis. Ted Baker navy high waisted trousers, £60.00, John Lewis.
Thank you to CollectPlus for supporting MTT and my trips to NYC!
