Ever since we moved house a week and a half ago I have been without broadband and relying on Orange’s horribly patchy 3G service. No Twitter, no Facebook, no blogging, no Peppa Pig… the situation is painful at best! I thought this article rings particularly true as Broadband evidently does run the Harold household…
While we all know the internet powers a large majority of the modern world, it is also responsible for the running family households. Don’t think so? Well, here are a few reasons to convince you:
1. Access to what you need
The internet is home to a world of information, from sourcing something as simple as a recipe to downloading a large amount of music or watching a hit film. All of these activities are crucial to family life and with fast connection and download speeds you’ll get what you need as soon as you need it.
2. Help on the go
In this day and age, there are a number of sophisticated gadgets available when it comes to the World Wide Web. Such applications allow those using the technology to complete online activities whilst on the move. For the working mum or dad this means checking emails on your way to work, ordering the food shopping online on your way home and even emailing photos of your little ones to grandparents and other relatives whilst travelling.
3. Variety of functions
Many of today’s internet providers are producing packages that boast bigger and better speeds to help consumers complete a variety of functions. For those with relatives far away, chatting over Skype is a great way to stay in contact – especially if you want to keep them updated on how your little ones are getting on. For parents who spend time working abroad or away from home, these chats can also provide much needed face- to-face interaction with your kids: ensuring you get all the quality time you need even when you’re not physically there.
4. Reliable connection
When everyone is using the internet at once, such as mum, dad and the kids, the connection package needs to be able to cope with demand. A system with a quick internet speed will allow everyone to surf in a hassle-free manner at the same time and the reliability of this means your household will have one less thing to struggle with when it comes to running the home.
5. Help with the homework
Lastly, the internet is an invaluable resource when it comes to helping kids with their homework. All parents feel a little out of their depth at times when children ask for help
on subjects they haven’t studied for years or perhaps even decades and the internet has the perfect answer. If you want to stay involved then surf the internet with your child to help them find the information they need – you might end up learning something yourself and you’ll be able to keep an eye on their online safety.

It is scary when I think how lost I would be without the internet…you forgot to add keeping up to date with mindless celeb gossip to your list (my guilty pleasure!) x
It is scary when you realise how dependent on the internet you are, those few days when you move house without or in a country where you don’t have wifi available but are too cheap to turn on the 3G.
In some ways it makes me appreciate the availability of fast broadband, in other ways it terrifies me that I’m so controlled by it!
Have a lovely day,
Jade
I have actually started to turn the internet off (or not use my iphone for emails) on a weekend and it’s liberating. We too are soo dependant and I’m slightly addicted to being online. Every so often, it’s nice to switch off x
